Rupert Hague-Holmes, a keen amateur military historian and committee member of the Jersey Branch of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, will deliver an audio-visual presentation on Operation Market Garden, focusing on the heroics of four British Army officers/soldiers of Jersey heritage.
Market Garden was one of the largest airborne operations in history. It consisted of two sub operations: ‘Market’ – an airborne assault to seize key bridges, laying a carpet of airborne troops – and ‘Garden’ – a ground attack moving over the seized bridges, creating a 64 mile salient into German held territory and a foothold over the Rhine. It resulted in failure and inflicted more casualties than D-Day.
There will be drinks and canapes on arrival from 1800hrs and the talk will commence at 1830hrs, with time for questions at the end. Tickets are available for £25 here.
