Behind the Scenes at the Palace of Westminster
Join us for a talk by former Black Rod Lieutenant General David Leakey CMG CVO CBE.
General David Leakey, recently retired as Black Rod, will give a fascinating and amusing insight into the history and the role of Black Rod, which as he will show, is more than just the ceremonial role at the State Opening of Parliament. He reveals a good deal of the goings-on behind the scenes in the Parliamentary corridors.
General Leakey was educated at Sherborne School and read law at Cambridge. He commanded the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment and 20th Armoured Brigade holding a range of MOD appointments including Director of Military Operations and Director General of Army Training and Recruiting. On the international front, he was the first Commander of the European Union Force Althea, followed by the appointment of Director General of the European Military Staff in Brussels. He retired from the Army in 2010.
