Mount Toubkal Summit Challenge 2023

Mount Toubkal Summit Challenge 2023 is a fabulous summit challenge of North Africa’s highest peak.  Mount Toubkal, also known as Jebel Toubkal, is set in the High Atlas Mountain range in Morocco standing at 4167m. This incredible challenge will take you on a journey through the Toubkal valley, passing through terraced farmland and Berber villages, where you can immerse yourself in the stunning surroundings.  It will feel like stepping back hundreds of years and is a wonderful escape from the fast- paced lives we live in the UK.  At the summit, we will be rewarded with views in every direction, from the High Atlas peaks in the north and to the south, the Sahara, rolling far away to the heart of Africa.  On the final day, we will have time to explore Marrakech and its famous Medina, the walled medieval city, with buzzing souks (marketplaces) where we can try a little bartering.  This is a unique opportunity to share a fantastic experience with fellow supporters of ABF, The Soldiers’ Charity, while challenging yourself and raising all-important funds for the charity.

Fitness

It is important that the team understand that this challenge requires a good degree of physical fitness.  Although it is not technical, the distances and conditions will require stamina and strength, which you should recognise and train for.  We don’t want to scare you – it’s just that you will have a much better time if you are fit and prepared.

Preparing for your Trek

The best way to build endurance fitness is to start with some gentle walks and gradually build up both the distance and duration over the next few months.  In the last 2 months, we would recommend to go out and do long days, ideally in the hills, to build up the strength in your legs. About a week before the trek, limit any training to short walks – you want to have fresh legs at the start!

For the trek you should be comfortable trekking between six to eight hours per day, but remember we have all day to achieve the distances and will not be going at racing snake pace. It may sound obvious, but make sure that you are walking properly, hitting the ground with your heel first, then rolling onto your toe, which pushes you onto the next step (this will help reduce the risk of shin splints and tendon pulls).

Walk with your head up, eyes forward and shoulders level. It is a good idea to develop a level of cardiovascular fitness (exercising and strengthening your heart and lungs). This comes from running, cycling or swimming for between 20 minutes and an hour, and will really help develop your endurance fitness. Three sessions a week is normally advised, increasing time and distance over time. On the trek you won’t be carrying your main pack, but you will need to carry a small day pack, packed with essentials like your camera, sunscreen and water. During your training, make sure you’re carrying the day pack that you will be using on the trek. Remember train hard trek easy.

SUGGESTED KIT

It is important to pack good quality and hard-wearing kit, this can make the difference between a fantastic challenge experience and an uncomfortable one. Personal Equipment – We will provide a full kit list in the trip notes that we will send out once the team is confirmed however here are few useful tips on key equipment:

Boots – Your boots will be crucial to the comfort of the trek and ensure you use these to train, we would suggest a proper trekking boot with good ankle support.

Wool socks are good and we would recommend this over synthetic ones. The most important advice we can give is to ensure they are worn in and have been tried and tested. If you don’t have boots already the outdoor shops are normally really helpful as their staff are trained on recommending the right footwear e.g. Cotswold Outdoors, Blacks and Millets.

Sleeping bag – a 3 /4 season sleeping bag is recommended, we will provide sleeping mattresses and extra blankets if required.
