On 13 November, at Durham Cathedral’s annual Festival of Remembrance, the Lord Lieutenant of County Durham, Mrs Sue Snowden, presented Eric with his award.

Over the years Eric, who is planning to stand down from the charity’s North East Committee later this year, organised a wide range of fundraising events. These included widely acclaimed musical concerts at iconic North East venues such as Sage Gateshead; and the annual Festival of Remembrance at Durham Cathedral.

During his time, Eric has raised approximately £750,000 for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity. He also set up our regional relationship with the Great North Run – through his links with legendary Olympian runner Brendan Foster – which has raised approximately over £100,000 over the years.

Lt Col Barney Barnbrook, Regional Director North East and Yorkshire, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, said:

“I congratulate Eric on the award and would like to thank him for all his brilliant work for our charity. He’s been one of our staunchest supporters both as a serving soldier and a veteran for decades and it’s been a privilege to work with him. His professionalism and benevolence put him in a league above the rest.”

The Montgomery Bowl

The Montgomery Bowl is our highest accolade and is named after Field Marshall Bernard Law Montgomery of Alamein, who played a central role in the Charity’s establishment in 1944.
