To help boost morale at this particularly challenging time and bring a smile to as many veterans’ faces as possible on VE Day, our charity worked with five leading veteran care providers: Royal British Legion Industries in Kent; Broughton House in Salford; Erskine in Scotland; the Royal Star and Garter in the South East and West Midlands; and the Royal Cambridge Home in Surrey to bring VE Day street parties into the homes.

Residents enjoyed a VE Day parties on Friday 8th May, with music, singing and other reminiscence activities. Staff ensured that even those self-isolate in their rooms had the party brought to them with bunting, room decorations and VE Day-themed tea and cake.

Residents at The Royal Star & Garter and Broughton House enjoyed a singalong to ‘We’ll Meet Again’ and observed the national two minutes’ silence to remember those who fought during the Second World War.

Brigadier (Ret’d) Robin Bacon, Chief of Staff at ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, said: “The coronavirus pandemic made it a little harder to commemorate VE Day this year, but our charity was delighted to partner with these leading care providers to ensure our elderly veterans could enjoy a celebration. On 8th May, we remember the loss of so many who fought for our freedom while also paying tribute to those who serve today.”
